Avondale is an organic winery dedicated to the land and people that bring wine to life in Paarl, South Africa.

 

Jonty’s Ducks Pekin White 2021- $19.99/btl $2.50/taste

A blend of Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Roussanne and Viognier showcasing zesty acidity, minerality and creamy mouthfeel. The vines are maintained by, you guessed it- ducks, oh and vineyard and winery manager Jonathan Grieve who discovered that ducks will eat the slugs, snails and weeds that would otherwise need to be kept at bay by un-organic methods.

 

Anima Chenin Blanc 2020- $32.99/btl $2.50/taste

100% Chenin Blanc from 10-35-year-old organic vines grown in granitic soils with strict yield limitations ranging from 4-8 tons/hectare. Hand-harvested and whole-cluster pressed in the Grieve family’s estate winery immediately, the juice is then allowed to ferment naturally before being transferred to 500L oak barrels and even 20% sees aging in amphorae. Finally, the wine ages 12 moths on the lees with regular batonnage. This wine is elegant and firmly structured with delicate tropical fruit notes and gentle aromatics.

 

Jonty’s Ducks Pekin Red 2018- $19.99/btl $2.50/taste

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz from the duck-guarded estate vineyards of Avondale bursting with black currant, licorice, dark chocolate and a hint of ground coffee. The hand-harvested grapes were destemmed and fermented in stainless steel before seeing 12-14 months in neutral French oak barrels.

 

Quevri 2021- $32.99/btl $2.50/taste

Grenache, Syrah and Mouvedre produced for the first time ever in South Africa in the historic Georgian Quevri. Quevri is a large, clay amphorae (that kinda looks like a carrot) that is buried in the ground up to the neck to regulate fermentation and maceration temperature. To clean it, in Georgia, they use St. John’s Wart stems and crawl inside and scrub. Wild. It’s the perfect vessel. Fermentation, maceration and maturation all happen in it and the result is a RICH, vibrant red wine with airy tannins and excellent texture.
